Fresh back from my trip to the Azores, I can confirm that Lagoa do Fogo is worth seeing if you get the chance to visit these lovely islands! It is one of the best-known lakes on São Miguel. People often call it a highlight, but also one of the most unpredictable: depending on the weather, you might see a turquoise lake or… a wall of fog. With my luck, let’s just say I got option B…
On the same day, we did the Lagoa do Fogo hike. It was a bust, with thick fog at the top. Then we went back to the miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo in the afternoon, and that time we had a little more success. The road winds between green slopes and clouds cling to the ridges. Sometimes, without warning, everything clears. The lake appears all at once, huge and silent, surrounded by very green vegetation (and yes, after a few days here you understand why).

It is not a place where you stay long, because the wind blows hard and the weather changes fast. Still, it is definitely one you keep in mind. It is calm and raw, exactly what you come to the Azores for: that feeling of being far from everything, in a landscape that still feels a little wild.
So let me tell you all about it below, from the viewpoint to the trail and everything practical.

Lagoa do Fogo (or Fogo Lake)
A lake perched in the heart of São Miguel
Lagoa do Fogo (literally “fire lake”) sits in the middle of the island of São Miguel. It formed in the crater of a volcano after an eruption in the 16th century. Today it is a protected nature reserve where nature has been left intact. There is no hotel, no restaurant and no visible trace of people. You just get a huge lake surrounded by grassy slopes and clouds racing past.
What strikes you first is how remote it feels. Lagoa das Sete Cidades is far easier to reach and much busier. Lagoa do Fogo, however, has a wilder side. You meet a few hikers, but it stays a little more intimate.

The viewpoint: miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo
The simplest (and quickest) way to see Lagoa do Fogo is to stop at the miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo. This is the main viewpoint on the road between Ribeira Grande and Lagoa (miradouro is simply the Portuguese word for a viewpoint). The road climbs in hairpins through the hills before opening up to a spectacular panorama over the crater. There is a small car park by the roadside, but it is often full in the middle of the day. So if you want to enjoy the place in peace, come early in the morning or at the end of the day, when the light changes and the visitors head off.
The weather remains the real key factor here. The lake is often completely hidden by cloud, sometimes for several hours. So you need a bit of patience, or you have to accept coming back later. That is also what makes the place special: you don’t really decide when it shows itself, it chooses. If all you see on arrival is white, do not give up straight away.

Lagoa do Fogo hike
This is probably the best way to discover Lagoa do Fogo. Seeing the lake from the road is nice, but getting there on foot is something else. Hiking lets you approach the site differently. You also get to enjoy the very particular vegetation of the Azores (a proper jungle), and above all that atmosphere so typical of São Miguel: damp, changeable, alive.
The PRC02 SMI Lagoa do Fogo trail
The best-known route is the PRC02 SMI Lagoa do Fogo. It is a loop of about 11 km with 500 m of elevation gain. It starts from the village of Praia (to the south) and climbs up to the lake. Allow roughly 3 h 30 to 4 h 30, depending on your pace and the weather. The start is just after a small water reservoir. First, the trail follows an earth track alongside fields. Then it climbs gradually through dense vegetation. On this first section you often walk in mist, with the smell of eucalyptus and damp earth.
As you climb, the slope gets steeper and the ground more slippery. Meanwhile, views start to appear between passing clouds. If you are lucky, Lagoa do Fogo reveals itself after about 5 km. It is not a difficult trail, but you do need to be comfortable on uneven ground, especially if the soil is soaked.
The descent towards the lake is one of the most beautiful parts. You cross a ridge and look down over the whole caldera (the wide volcanic basin that holds the lake). The contrast between the green slopes and the milky blue of the lake is striking. At the bottom there is a small beach, praia da Lagoa do Fogo, where many people stop for a picnic.

Walking around Lagoa do Fogo
Some people want to keep hiking around Lagoa do Fogo, but it is not really recommended. The ground is unstable and often muddy. Besides, several areas are classed as “strict nature reserve”, so in theory they are off limits. It is better to enjoy the accessible shores. Then you can go back the way you came, or close the loop along the ridge.
What I liked about this hike is its variety. You go from a red earth path to dense woodland, and then to completely open sections with views of the ocean. On a clear day you can even see the north coast of the island. However, it is also a temperamental place. It can be bright sunshine at the start and raining ten minutes later at the top. You have to accept it, because it is part of the charm of the area.
Practical tips for the hike
- Duration: 2 to 4 hours depending on your pace.
- Distance / elevation gain: about 11 km / 500 m.
- Difficulty: intermediate (slippery in places).
- Start: village of Praia (car park next to the reservoir).
- Access to the lake: by the main trail or from the miradouro (steep descent, about 20 minutes).
- Recommended hiking gear: waterproof hiking boots, poles, warm clothes even in summer.
- Warning: do not go down if the mist is too thick or if it is raining heavily, because the ground becomes unstable.
It is a hike not to be skipped on São Miguel. It is not necessarily the easiest, but it is surely one of the most memorable. If you are hesitating between the viewpoint and the trail, I would do both when the weather allows.

When to visit Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo is one of the most unpredictable places on São Miguel. Even when the rest of the island is sunny, the lake can be completely wrapped in mist. That is also why it keeps this slightly mysterious atmosphere: you need a bit of luck to catch sight of it.
Generally, the best period runs from May to September, when temperatures are mild and the paths a little drier. However, that guarantees nothing, because the Azores have their own weather logic. Locals often say you can live through four seasons in the same day, and it is true. So it is better to set off with a rain jacket, even if the sky is blue.
If you want to maximise your chances of a good view of Lagoa do Fogo, aim for early morning or late afternoon. Clouds often form in the middle of the day. Also, the low light makes the lake even more beautiful.
Practical tips for your visit
- Bring waterproof shoes, because the ground is often soaked.
- Pack something warm, even in summer, as the wind blows hard at the top.
- Check the local weather forecast (SpotAzores is quite reliable).
- Avoid days of heavy rain, since some sections become slippery.
What to do around Lagoa do Fogo
Even though Lagoa do Fogo is worth the trip on its own, there is quite a lot to see right next door. São Miguel is rich in activities. So in a single day, you can easily combine the hike with some relaxing stops or other points of interest.
Beaches and hot springs
On the way down from the lake towards the south coast, you can stop at Caldeira Velha. It is a thermal site in the middle of the forest, with natural hot pools. It is one of the most pleasant places on the island to unwind after a hike. The water is around 38 °C and slightly iron-rich, and the place keeps a real natural feel. Entry is paid (around €10). However, the site is well looked after and the number of visitors is limited, which avoids the crowds.
If you prefer the sea, the beaches of Ribeira Grande and Praia de Santa Bárbara are less than 30 minutes away by car. They are long black sand beaches where you can walk, swim or simply watch the surfers. The water is cool, but the local atmosphere is worth the detour.
Villages and viewpoints nearby
On the way, make a detour via Ribeira Grande, a pleasant little town for a coffee or lunch. The centre is charming, with its traditional houses and cobbled lanes.
Further south, around Lagoa, several miradouros offer lovely views over the coast and the tea fields. It is also an area where you will find some nice places to stay, if you want to sleep nearby.
And if you want to extend your exploration of São Miguel, there is the Salto do Cabrito. This pretty waterfall, tucked into a gorge, is about 15 minutes away by car. The trail leading to it is short (about 1 hour return). However, it crosses suspended walkways above former geothermal pipes, which is original and easy to combine with Lagoa do Fogo.
